THE WAIRAU MASSACRE.
AN INTERESTING LETTER
(From 'The Colonist," Jan. 15tb.)
A notable addition to the New Zealand national'historical collection \is a letter of condolence written or'Hhe occasion of the Wairau massacre, 17th June, 1843. A facsimile of the letter has been forwarded to the "Post" by the Director of the Dominion. Museum, and is as follows: —
"To the inhabitants of the Settlement of Nelson in New Munster.
"We, the Mayor, Alderman, Towr: Councillors, and undersigned Inhabitants cf the Borough of-Wellington, offer to, you, our fellow colonists of Nelson, the assurance of our deep and heartfelt sympathy in the, severe calamity which has befallen the Colony, l)j the horrible massacre at Wairoa. "It the same time that we proffer to you our sincere condoler cc for the irreparable loss you have sustained by the untimely fate of thoso who fell in , the attempt to uphold the equal authority of British laws among British subjects, we pledge ourselves to aid by our best exertions yo\ir -endeavours to procure justice for the x j>ast, and protection for the future.
"Wellington, 11th July, 1843." Then follows the signatures q£ a large number of Wellington citizens.,
