THE WAIRAU MASSACRE.
AN INTERESTING LETTER
A notable addition to the New Zealand national historical collection is a letter of condolence written or. the occasion of the Wairau massacre, 17th June, 1843. A facsimile of the letter has been forwarded to the "Post" by the Director of _the Dominion Museum, and is as follows: — "To- the 'Inhabitants of the- Settlement o[: Nelson in New Minister.
"We, the Mayer, Alderman, Towr Councillors, and undersigned,* Inhabitants of the Borough of Wellington, orfer to you, our follow colonists cf Nelson, the assurance of our deep and heartfelt sympathy iv the severe calamity, which has befallen the Colony, by the horrible massacre, at Wairoa. "It the same time th;H we proffer to you our sincere- condolerce for the in-rparable lc-ss / you have sustained by the untimely f axe of those who fell in the affempV to- riipbold the en,ual authority-of British laws umong British subjects, we pledge ourselves to aid by our best exertions your endeavours to procure justice- for the past, and protection for tlie future.
