DROWNING FATALITY.
(From "The Colonist," Dec. sth.) While on her usual trip from Takaka to Nelson on Wednesday evening, the Wairoa put in to Awaroa-for the purpose of picking up a consignment of cherries from Mr E. Hadfield, son of Mr W. Hadfield, a well-known settler of the district, who put off to. the vessel in a dinghy. The cherries were placed o.i board, but, owing to the heavy sea running, it was not deemed advisable to transfer a quantity of stores that were on the steamer to the boat, and the Wairoa's voyage was lesumed.. Yesterday morning the dinghy was found washed up on the beach, but there was no trace of the occupant. Constable Edwards, of Takaka, left for Awaroa yesterday morning to assist in the search for the missing settler, Mr Hadfield was a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and had not long returned home.
The body of the young man Everard Roger Hadfield, who was drowned off Awaroa on Wednesday night while returning in a dinghy from the steamer Wairoa, was found at midday on Saturday about a mile from the place where it is believed the accident occurred. Dragging operations were carried on persistently until they were successful.
