INFLUENZA.
Regarding the complaints made by the ex-Minister of Public Health (Hon. G. W. llussell) as to the inadequate arrangements made by the Waiapu Hospital Board in connection with the Te Araroa epidemic, members of the board state that a deputation asked the department in May, 1917,. and has since frequently requested a Ministerial visit to look into the situation, but without result. The board considered that it was the Government's duty to send trained medical orderlies to cope with the situation. Recurring epidemics were doubtless due to the conditions under which the Maoris live, and whilst the State might pass legislation requiring, settlers to provide propor quarters for shearers, it had failed in the supervision of Maori settlements, and the board considered it unfair that tho cost of copi 1112 with these epidemics should fall on tiie shoulders of European settlers. Effective measures should be taken te stamp out tho disease.
