THE WAIRAU SEAT.

Mr. E. H. Penny, the Reform candidate for the Wairau seat, addressed the electors, at Wakefield ou-Tuesaay evening, and. was received by a good and interested audience. Mr. Noble Win was in the chair, and briefly introduced tho candidate in very inendly terms. The speech dealt with various phases of current political events, including land settlement, stoppage of land aggregation, revision of tanii, education, and a policy of thoroughgoing development of our natural resources to enable us to face and effectively grapple with the financial and other difficulties consequent on tiie war and other circumstances. On Wednesday evening Mr. Penny met the electors at, Foxhiil, where an excellent meeting was held, the speaker addressing a capital audience and quickly getting into touch with his hearers. Air. Thompson occupied.the chair, and the ackiivss, which was an elaboration of that given at Vvakeefild, was received with applause. Mr-. Penny, in justification of his aspiration to the wider neids of national politics, shortly recounted liis twenty-five years of local public

affairs in Marlbofough. Questions of present interest were asked at; each meeting, and frankly answered by the candidate, and at both meetings a warmly endorsed vote of thanks was tendered to the candidate. —Communicated.
