ANNIVERSARY SERVICES.

Anniversary services in connection with the Nelson Baptist Sunday School were Held in the School of Music on Sunday. The platform was tastefully decorated witn arum lilies. Tho morning service was taken by Mr P. A. Dickson (Church or Christ), who gave an address to the pupils and teachers on the importance of Bible instruction. The Itev. John Laird conducted the afternoon service, speaking on "Seed bowAng." At the evening service tho 1 all was taxed to its full seating capacity,many being unable to gain admission. The president of the school (Rev. Mr. Laird) gave an address, basing his remarks on the well-known nursery rhyme "There was crooked man." The speaker, who illustrated his address with a crooked stick, a straight stick, a piece of ivy, and some tender twigs, con-, trasted the result of leading a crooked life with that to bo gained by the straight life. The singing of the children was a special feature of the services, and greatly added to the success of the gatherings, much credit 'being due to .vlr Ernest Wood, conductor, who trained the young folk. Miss Mabel Thomson played the Cawthron organ at the morning service, and Mr John Tait in the afternoon arid evening. At the afternoon service the children of the primary department received their prizes. October 30th. At the Nelson School of Music last evening the celebrations in connection with the Baptist Sunday School were continued. The hall was again full. The Rev. John Laird opened the meeting with prayer. The superintendent (Mr Thomas Pettit) presided over the gathering. In his opening address he referred to the happy circumstances under which they met, as compared with the past live anniversaries, when tiiey were under the cloud of war. He trusted all would enter upon the new year with greater enthusiasm and zeal than before the war.
The annual report was presented by Miss Thomson (secretary). The number of scholars on the roll was as follows :—Boys 99, girls 140; total, 239. Teachers: Nine ladies, seven gentlemen. Four prises and nine certificates were gained in the Sunday School Scripture examination; and two prizes and nine certificates in the Baptist Union examination. The Senior Young Women's Bible Class, under Miss Baigent, has a membership of 14. The Young Men's Bible Class has been re-opened, under the leadership of Mr Cullen. The infant department, conducted by Mr and Mrs H. Wood, is a special feature of the school work. One scholar was removed by death (Esther Robertson). Forty young men who had passed through the school enlisted and saw active service. Five made the supreme sacrifice. The school contributed the sum of £35 11s towards foreign mission work. The report concluded' with thanks to those who had assisted to make tHe anniversary services a success, special mention being made of Mr A. E. Wood (conductor) and Mr John Tait (organist). A varied programme of musical and elocutionary items was rendered by the scholars.

At the Baptist Sunday School anniversary celebration last night, Mr T. Pettit Vas congratulated on having completed 29 years of service as superintendent.
