(Receiyed. July 27, 11.5 p.m.) o . w London, July 26. Sir Edward Poynter, President of the Royal Aeaderay> is dead, aged 83.

Sir Edward John Poynter, first Baronet, was born at Paris in 1836, the son of an architect, and was educated at Westminster and Ipswich Grammar" School. He studied art in London and Paris, and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1869, and a Royal Academician in 1876. He was Blade Professor of Art at University College, London, from 1871 to 1875, principal of the National A*rt Training School, South Kensington until 1881, and director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1905
