CORRESPONDENCE.
THE WAR MEMORIAL.
(To the Editor of "The Colonist. 17} Sir, —I was surprised at tha audaeitv o? your correspondent, Mr Wm. Lock., m ascribing 'tlie initiative of a soldiers' memorial in Anzac Park to Sir Watt [Over three years ago Mr Simpson, of the "Mail" office, suggested the idea to me of naming the then Milton's Aero as Anzac Park in memory of our men who took part in that memorable event. I brought the matter up in the Council and the name was agreed to. Immediately the idea took hold of me that this was not sufficient, arid that a suitable memorial building should be erected there containing the name of every Nelson man whose services were accepted by the country. I talked the matte* over with Mayor Harley and others at the time, but it was decided that ifc .would be inadvisable to take definite action until the war was over. Some two months before the past Council went out of office I moved that the Mayor should call a public meeting to consider the question, but it was considered wise ro leave the matter in the hands' of ohe incomin.Gr Council. If there is any hon* our in initiative itbelones to Mr'Smioson, whose suggestion was most admirable, and I truet. will be carried into eiiect, viz., tho erection of a suitable memorial in Anzao Park to every Nelson man who entered the service. ".
I am, etc.,
WM. SPENCER HAMPSON. Nelson. June 14th.
