Sergeant R. A. Ricketts, who has beeri awarded the Military Service Medai, is a son of Mr C. A. Ricketts, of Neison. Mr Samuel Jickeli, formerly City Engineer at Nelson, has tendered his resignation as Borough Engineer at Palmerston North, he having agreed to take other work whichwill occupy the greater part of his time. The resignation has been accepted, the Mayor and Councillors eulogising the services Mr Jickeli has rendered to the borough. Captain V. F. Usher, N.Z.M.C., son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Usher, of NelHon, after paying a short visit fo his parents, has left for England as medical officer of s.s. Zealandic, via Bombay, where troops are to be embarked for Plymouth. Dr. Usher has had over two years'' service with the Allied forces in France. It is his intention while in England to study the many important phases of medical science which have developed since the outbreak of the war. Mr J. A. Melrose, Inspector" of Noxious ."Weeds, who has been attached to the Nelson office of the Agricultural Department for the past three years, is Being transferred to Canterbury, and v/i]l leave for his new sphere of duties m a few days. Mr Melrose has been an exceedingly courteous officer, and will carry with him 'best'wishes for continued advancement in his Department. Mr A. V. King, late Postmaster ab Lyttelton, was an inward passenger by the Pateena on Saturday. Mr "King, ■who was one of the Cable Bay boys, has seen service in the Post and Telegraph Department for the past 40 years, and i« now retiring, and residents will be pleased to learn that he contemplates living in the country districts of Nelson. Mr E.Xlowles, of Khandallah, a former resident of Nelson, and for many, years headmaster of Richmond School/ is at present in Nelson on a visit. H© was some 60 years ago employed on the staff of "The Colonist." Four of Mr Bowies' sons have served at the front, all in the Rifle Brigade, whilst a son-in-}n\v. was for some time a prisoner of ■ war in Germany. . Lieutenant W. Benzies is severing his connection with the Defence Depart-, rnent,. and-intends entering- the eommer- > cial side of the fruit industry at Tasman; Lieutenant Benzies -during nis term at the local Defence office was a most courteous and helpful officer; and his many friends will wish him success in civil life;- ■, . • . ■■■■~■■
