TARANAKI IRON.

ASSISTANCE ASKED FOR

[United Press Association.3

New Plymouth, April 14. The Industries Committee opened its sittings here to-day, and was welcomed, by the Mayor and the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. The first matter introduced was the iron ore and the ironsand industry. Evidence was given by the chairman of the New Zealand Iron Ore Smelting Company, Mr Perm, who related what had been done by the company, and alludeH to the difficulty with'regard to the price and supply. of labour and capital,, also the need of a reliable expert opinion. He stated that there was a reasonable prospect of the project developing into a, payable concern, as the, tests showed iron far above Government standard requirements, but the company was handicapped by the want of cooking apparatus. He hoped the Government.would get a report on the prospects and method of working; and he though the company was entitled to some assistance from the Government. The main desire was to obtain the, opinion of a . satisfactory expert. .

Mr J. G. Smith, on behalf of another syndicate for producing pig iron, asked for Government aid, and suggested the Government taking over his patents.
