MQNTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs H. R. Duncan (chairman). H. P. Washbourn, I. Tunniclitf, T. Edwards, W. W. Snodgrass, li. B. Jackson, G. Maemahon, and A. P. Allport. Mr J. Ingram was excused from attendance. ' FINANCE The bunk pass-book showed the following balances: —Or., general account, £359 13s Sd; fixed deposit, £4200. Receipts : Pilotage, March, £203 13s 7d (corresponding month, 1918, £187 18s 3d"; -since April Ist, £2248\3s 7d (corresponding period to April Ist, 1918, £3182 17s .8d); monthly average, £187 7s. as against £265 4s"lOd: other receipts, £29-1 9s 7d. ing that arrangements had been made for tho Lyttelton dredge to do the berthage dredging at the wharf. An application to enclose the wharf on Easter Monday on the occasion of the forthcoming regatta was granted. ■HARBOURMASTER'S- REPORT; .The Harbourmaster (Captain Collins) reported that the trade of the port for the period ending March 31st showed a decrease of 1506 torts in the total tonnage for the month as compared • with the corresponding month last year. During the month 129 vessels entered and left the port, made up as follows: —14 Union steamers, 101 small steamers, and 14 sailing vessels, having atotal of 18,054 tons register. Work in connection with the repairs to the wharf at Mapua were almost completed, witH the exception of an extra set of rails which were now being placed in position on the wharf for the purpose of" using two I trucks for facilitating the loading and , unloading of cargo. This work would be ! limshed within the next few days. The | derrick was also "being renewed, as the

old one was considered unsafe for tho handling of heavy cargo. GENERAL. On Cr. Macmahon's motion it was resolved that it be a recommendation to the new board to consider the matter or the inclusion of the Murchison district and a portion of tho Mapua district in th eNelson harbour district. On the motion of Mr Tunnicliffe, tlie proposed visit to the Appleby foreshoro was postponed until after the election. Mr Edwards .moved that a winch 'he purchased and erected at the boat steps by the Harbourmaster for handling cargo from launches. The cost .would, bo about £11. —Seconded by Mr Macmahon and carried. •
