PEACE CELEBRATIONS.
CITY COUNCIL GRANTS £500
At the meeting of the City Council last evening Messrs T. A. H. Field M.P., C. J. Harley, E. J. Allen, aud Walter S.-Snodgrass waited upon the council as a deputation from the Peace Celebration Committee to request a contribution up to' £500 in the terms of the resolutions passed at the citizens' meeting held on the previous evening. Messrs Field and Harley were the spokesmen. When the matter was considered later the Mayor said that the committee as it would be constituted coiild be depended upon hot to be extravagant, and it would not follow tflat because money was available it would be expended to the limit unless it was ne-'i cessary. The occasion was so great that the celebration should be a" worthy one, and he would like to see the Council prepared to stand behind the committee up to £1000. Little had been done for patriotic purposes by the Council, out of rates, and this was an occasion where the ratepayers should stand Tjehind the people in the way of finance. '
After discussion, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Crs. Rout and Hampson, that a- sum up to £500 be placed at the disposal of the Celebration Committee.
