MARBLE AND COPPER DEPOSITS.
Mr. W. R. B. Vass, quarry manager, referred to the marble, slate and copper deposits' in the Takaka district. He produced samples of marble which he claimed were eminently suitable for interior decorative purposes. The slate deposits in.Takaka were larger than any he had seen in Scotland, where he came frpm, and the slate was a good quality. By Mr. Luke: There were no moro defects in New^ Zealand marble thpn in the French anci Belgian marble. Since the war Italian marble had gone up 80 per cent, owing to the increase in wage's.
Continuing, witness said he could supply large blocks of certain marbles, and he asked the committee to recommend greater use of this marble.
-Mr. Vass submitted the analyses of samples of copper taken from deposits on his property. He asked for Government assistance in proving the loift. By Mr. Hornsby: If the Government proved the iodo the syndicate would repay the cost.
By Mr. Hudson: The deposit was quite close to the Parapara boundary in places. ' v
Mr. Hornsby: There arc great possibilities awaiting development in this district.'
