According to a message published this week/ the Ministerial newspapers in London are now preaching moderation in ihe treatment of, Germany, and tho "Observer" is quoted as suggesting that the."body politic of the whole of civilisation will be poisoned" if the Allies insist on making Germany suffer for her irimes. It looks as if some British publicists were in a tremendous hurry to be kind to Germany, says the "Lytteitori Times." Nothing is surer than that generosity to the enemy will be treated as a sign of weakness by the Germans vhemselves, and that even if they are not able to exploit the weakness or supnosed weakness the tendency of German people-will be to forgive its rulers for past sins'. The Allies should be slow to j relax their hold on enemy countries, and j it will be time enough to show! generosity towards the Germans "when: tiie Germans have had the opportunity! >f proving themselves penitent. Prob"-| "ibly the London newspapers are "becoming a little panic-stricken at the thought of-a Germany given over to Spartasicm i and becoming a centre for the spread of , Bolshevism over Europe. . _ Lady Bathurst advertised her thanks j in a London paper to "whoever sent her I i the ring which she lost 17 years ago."
