Invercargi!!, Jan. 6 Recientlv several fires occurred
unoccupied houses in circumstances suggesting incendiarism. On Saturday Wiliam Lawrence, a youth employed as a messenger by the Fire Brigade, was arrested ova charge of setting fire to a house in Dor. street. The police stated that the accused had admitted his fcTuilt in connection with six fires. Tie was remanded till the 9th inst.
The frequency with which fives occur in Inrercargil] has become a subject iov comment. The "Southland Tnno.;'; state's that almost every tire that has taken place during the last two months has been in an unoccupied Jiouse, and in most instances the fire has been outside the house. Suspicion hac been aroused j 2 and it is suspected that all the outbreaks have not been accidental, but that they can be attributed to a youthful band of incendiaries, whose false ideas of amusement have led them to employ their school vacation in this foolish manner.
