HAVELOCK.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ,
Our electric light, schemo is now an accomplished fact, and for a week past the town has been illuminatoch once more, but with a much more brilliant light. Some of the shops and the Town Hall have it installed, and St. Petor s vestry passed a vote to have it put into the church, school and vicarage.
We have had a visit from Mrs. A. J. Carr, of Richmond, and she addressed the Gleaners' Union on her experiences as a missionary in India, and was listened to with much interest, a large gathering of members being present. The vicar presided, and at the close of the address a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the speaker. The- ladies handed round refreshments..
The monthly gift afternoon was a great . success. The competition on authors was won by Mrs. Elliott, sen. These afternoons gain in popularity, and the funds of St. Peter's-'Ghu,rch are augmented thereby. Death has been busy amongst us, there having passed away during the week no fewer than four" of our little community, including Mrs. Winnie Manihera ,Mr Peter. Archer, of the Sounds', and Mr Thomas Looms. Our patriotic friends have made a new venture and opened a Red. Cross Shop, -which on its first day met with a good response and a ready sale of everything in stock. Mr. Girling has kindly given the \\se of a vacant >ihop for this enterprise. ,
