N.Z.E.I. NELSON BRANCH.

ANNUAL MEETING

'The animal meeting; of the Nelson •ranch of the- New Zealand Eduoational Mstibute was held, at the Girls' Central School on Saturday morning. In the ibscncc of the president (Mr T. J. Sriffin), who an apology, tfr.C. M. G. Boyce was voted to the :hair. An apology for absence was uso .received from the viQe-president [Mr R. Irwin). . . Miss Johnson, the- hon. treasurer, I submitted the , balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of about £20. The annual report was read by the secretary (Mr Frank Colcman) as i'ol.ows:— "Meetings: r.iring Iho yo a r six JSOiieral meetings, have boot) hold, in <ifl-; Jition to attendance at informal meet-j .ngs with the Dominion organiser, Mr| K. U. Just. it is -hopod that an i future regular dates for meetings may; be fixed. j "Discussions. —At several of the1 meetings during the year discussions :>n the teaching of subjects have been hold. These have proved most interesting and instructive and we are greatly indebted to Mr F. G. Gibbs, M.A., for so ably leading in them, and also to Mrs Kidson for her paper on the Wanganui Montessori School. We venture to hope that; discussions may be continued during the ensuing vea'r. "Library.—A small, but we hope select, reference library of educational works has been established nt the board's office during the year. The catalogue is in preparation, and will be issued immediately. "Institute.—The N.Z.E.I. at the last annual conference imposed a. levy of 4 s 6d per member to defray the expenses of propaganda work by the organising secretary, Mr Just. '■ "Propaganda.—The organiser raid us a visit extending over a week. He met teachers and the public. The press extended valuable aid, and from time to time reports on education topics have since appeared. Your executive would remind you that the work initiated has still to .be •carried on in the cause of education. No-opportunity of keeping the cause before the public should be lost, if we are to have a truly national system and one Avorthy of the name in every sense. "Protection.—During the year the <ase of a teacher being subjected to ■abuse was taken up by "the executive, and we are pleased to state brought to a satisfactory issue. Another ease involving legal points is still under review. , "Picture Shows.—lt is noted with very* great satisfaction that, the muchvexed question of cinemas has been approached in Nelson. In"coniunctinn with the W.C.T.U., the Nelson ' city teachers have inaugurated a• sj^stem of censorship which -will no doubt give a mucb.-deß.jred lead to the Tvholo Dominion. "Buller Branch.—Perhaps the outstanding feature of the year has been the foi-mation of a separate branch for the Bailor district. The preliminaries ax-e settled, and we earnestly hope the members: on the other side, of tTie district will gf:in much enthusiasm in institute matters. Every assistance has been rendered them in the matter 6i their secession from the parent hranch, which we have hailed as evidencing enthusiasm, and being in the true spirit of the constitution "of the N.Z.E.I. "Mr Veysey.—Since the last annual meeting Mr J. T. Veysey, our auditor, has retired on superannuation. We trust he may long be spared to enjoy his well-earned leisure. "The War.—Wo feel we cannot con-clude-this report without expressing the hope that ere another j-ear passes the great, conflict now raging' on the other side of the world may be brought'to a glorious and just termination " The report and Ijalanae-sheet were adopted. It was resolved that in the .future the .annual" meeting be held on tlv: second Saturday ,in February.; y As it is only a short time before the next annual meeting, owing to .the alteration in the date, the election of officers was not proceeded with, the present executive to carry on in the interim. . Serious injuries were sustained nt Te Kuiti by Mrs Wilson„ wife of Mr C. K. Wilson, farmer, of Piopio, and ex-M.P. for Taumarunui, as the result of an unusual shot-gun accident. A loaded .gun was accidentally dropped near whore Mrs Wilson was standing. It discharged on striking the ground, and the charge lodged in her foot. She Avas1 removed to the Waikato Hospital,-'where it was feared amputation would be necessary, but the hospital authorities now hope to be able to save the foot.
