One of tiio effects of tlic war xipoi; labour was pointed out to a Wanganui "Herai('.!' i'e])resentativc hy tho officer in charge of" the local branch of the Labour Depart-Tncnt, Mr Gohns. Generally througiiout the district there is plenty of work a\ lutable, and there arc also quite a- number of men looking for work. From inquiries he had.made, ilr Gohns found that it was difficult to moke engagements, ihc men picking and-choosing-their-work, and taking the bast offering. Tho reason for this is probablj that the demand for labour exceeds tiis supply, also that the employers and employee's idea of the remuneration orid conditions of employment do not coincide. The same position applies so far as dome-stic female labour is concerned. Many girls prefer employment in the better-class hotels, and will not look at other locations, while for the ordinary household domestic girls are hard to procure.
