NELSON ANGLICAN SYNOD.

The Anglican Synod resumed at 11 a.an. yesterday. The Dean of Nelson (Rev. Dr. Weeks) proposed and Mr J. B. Harrison seconded, "That the best thanks of this Synod be tendered to the1 Rev. F. Quintrell for his helpful sermon at the Synod service, find that a copy of this resolution 'be forwarded to him." This was carried with acclamation.

Leave of absence was granted to Messrs J. H, Harkness W. P. Morriss, W. Cochrane, H. Paaka, and E. J. Smith. ■

The Yen. Archdeacon York moved, "That this Synod upon all the clergy and laity of the diocese the necessity of heartily supporting the work of the Military Affairs Committee.'' The Archdeacon spoke warmly_of the .great-work done by the Church Army amongst the New Zealand soldier's. •" Arising out of this motion a discussion took place on the work of the Church Army on behalf of our troops in France and on other battle-fronts.

The Rev. J. F. Coursey gave a glowing account of the work of the Church Army in France as seen by him m the front lines. It is Hot generally known that the Church Army was' the first organisation on behalf of our Droops in b'rance. He urged whole-hearted support of the Synod and Church people on behalf or this excellent society. The Rev. H. B. W. White, the Rev. A. Berryriian, and Dr. Mackay also snoke-m favour pi' this work.

*Tlie motion was carried unanimously. The Synod adjourned at noon to attend the annual missionary luncheon and meeting at All Saints' Schoolroom. The Synod resumed at 3 p.m. It was. proposed-by Mr 0. W. Pitts Brown, and seconded by Yen. -Archdeacon York, "That this Synod approve of the proposed Bill., to. amend Title B, Canon 5." As this Bill was a recommendation .from, the General Synod dealing with a communicants' roll, and the basis of membership in the Church

of England, an interesting discussionensued, and when pub to the Synod by the- President, the proposition was carried by a large majority. It was proposed by Dr. Mac'kay, seconded by the Dean of Nelson, ""That this Synod desires to place on record an expression of its gratitude £o Almighty God for having permitted the recent; and continuing success of our armies, and those of our Allies, and its deep ihankfulness for the 'brignter prospects of complete deliverance from ail imminent and overwhelming peril." This was carried unanimously, the whole Synod rising and singing tJie National Anthem and the Doxology. Mr H. S. Fredericks proposed, seconded by Mr J. J. W. White, "That this Synod take into consideration the advisability of having a universal hymn book throughout the diocese for use in our Sunday schools, and refer the same to the Sunday School Committee."—

It was proposed by the Rev. F. J. Ferry, and seconded by Mr G. W. Pitts Brown, "That this Synod expresses its approval of the National Efficiency Board's recommendation regarding the liquor question, and earnestly hopes that it will be carried into effect'; and that this resolution be forwarded to the Hon. the Acting-Prime Minister by the President." l-his was unanimously carried, after discussion the whole Synod feeling the time had come to purge the country of an unnecessary evil. Mr W J. Girling pioposed, seconded by llev. F. Quintrell, "That in future the amounts raised in each parish and parochial district for foreign missions be shown separately in the report of the Foreign Missions Committee and printed in the Year Book."—Agreed to. The Sunday School Committee appointed'for the year were the Yon. Archdeacon Kempthorne, Rev. Dr. Weeks, Itevs. Canons Wollstein and Dart, Revs. A. J. Carr and F. J. Fcrrv. and Messrs E. E. B'oyes, W&Yiirk, and. G. A, Edmonds.

The new Pension Bill was read a third time and passed on the motion of Mr C. W. Pitts Brown, seconded by Mr J. J. W. White. The report of the sessional committee on parochial returns, together with recommendations, was adopted. The Rev. Canon Wollstein and Messrs: A. C. Maginnityand G. A. Edmonds were appointed Pension Fund Commis-

sioners,

It was resolved that a retiring collection on behalf of the Military Affairs Committee be made in all churches on the third Safcday in November.

The Rev. F. Quintreil moved, "That this Synod places on record its appreciation of the self-denying work of the Rev. Canon Dart as. acting-diocesan secretary. His uniform courtesy and the marked ability which characterise his work are fully recognised throughout the diocese, and this Synod desires to take this opportunity of making n permanent record of these services." The motion was seconded by the Rev. G. A. Grossman, supported by other | members, and carried amid warm applause. A, stiggestion was made that Canon Dart's services should be recognised in a substantial manner.

On the motion of the Rev. Dr. Weeks, it was resolved, "That this Synod heartily appreciates the assistance of the organists and choirs in the worship of the*various congregations of' the dioce«e."' . ,

It was resolved, on the motion of the! Rev. Canon Wollstein, "That a hearty vote of thanks be given to the lay readers of the diocese for their very valuable work during the past year!" The Hpv. W. W.Bedwell moved, and it was agreed to,-"That this Synod dedesires to express its heartiest appreciation of the seli-denying labours of ottr Sunday school teachers, many of whom sacrifice a; large portion of their spare time in furtherance of that which is so I much in their hearts."

Votes-of thanks were also accorded to

the hosts and hostesses of visiting members of Synod,-to .the press, to the two members of Synod who reported the proceedings for the newspapers, and to the President, the chairman of committees, and the secretaries. Archdeacon York, whoso remarks were ■received "with applause, expressed the pleasure that all felt that Bishop Mules was still with them, and able to occupy his seat in Synod. On the motion of the Rev. J. F. Conrsoy it was resolved that a message of greetings 'be sent to thos ( e members of Synod who are at present.away serving with the Expeditionary Forces'. The hope was expressed that members would endeavour to be present at the service to be-held at the Cathedral at 10.30 a.m. to-day.

.The President pronounced the Benediction, and the session closed at about 5.45 p.m.
