Christohurch, March 9. Sentences were announced to-day on thi-ee reservists tried by court-martial for falling to attend medical examination. Edward Mortimer Murane was sentenced to two years' ; John Roberts io eighteen months', and Andrew Kennaway Henderson to nine months' mi prisonment, in each case with hard labour. . J.u connection with the court-martial sentences announced to-day, Colonel Chaftey, ..Officer Commanding the Canterbury district,Who confirmed the sentences, explained that the court imposed -i heavy sentence on Murane because he, as V Second Division reserv-i is fc, tried to evade the authorities for1 fifteen months, and showed'an obstinate disposition, refusing to be examined. and being against everything associated: with military service. Roberts did notj refuse to come up when called on, arid: it was not necessary to arrest'him, and he had a lighter sentence. Henderson, the well-known newspaper artist, came forward on his own initiative, and didj not expound' his anti-mtl^tafist viewa^ in public, although he had held them' for fifteen yars past and he received { only nine months.
