NELSON HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Wednesday. Present: MessrsT. Nealo. (chairman), C. R. Fell, G. Macinahon, T. Hewetson, J. G. Page, R. Win, and Mrs Watson. Mr A. Manoy was excused from attendance.

Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £481 6s 7d for the hospital, and £502 10s 9d for charitable aid.

HOSPITAL SURGEON'S REPORT,

The Hospital Surgeon (Dr.! Janiieson) ■reported that, 40 pa,tionts .werei .admitted .during the month, 46 were . discharged, and 4- died, leaving 67 in the institution at the end of . February, "there were admitted several cases of scarlet fever, and seven of diphtheria, all of them severe. All except one country case were from the lower parts of the city. Dr. Jamieson urged teachers and parents to take notice of and call attention to any symptoms of sore throat amongst school children. RELIEVING OFFICER'S REPORT. The Relieving Officer (Mr H. Coltman) j reported that twelve families had been !in receipt of assistance during Febru--8,1-3'. The total amount of assistance granted during the month to families in iSielson in rations and fuel was £23 Is 2d. HEALTH INSPECTOR'S REPORT. Tho Health Inspector (Mr. H. Coltman) reported that live cases of diphtheria had occurred in the city during February, and four cases of scarlet fever tad been notified. Ten samples Jof milk had been taken, all of which complied with the ■ regulations. Various samples of bread had been purchased, all of which were satisfactory. CORRESPONDENCE

Sister Tame forwarded her resignation a.s sister-in-charge of the annexe. —Resignation accepted, and Sister Axup appointed to the position.

From Mr. W. Gee, Chief Postmaster, regretting that no exception could be made in regard to the fee of £2 for telephone night switching.

The Buller Hospital Jioard forwarded copy of a resolution suggesting that the time is now ripe for the nationalisation of the medical profession in New Zealand, and asking the Nelson Board's opinion; also forwarding the reply of the Hon. G. W..Russell, stating that the question tad received careful con sidertion, but it was thought undesirable to raise the large issiyj involved 4it a time when so many medical men are absent on war work. The Minister added that the question v.-as really one for the electors of the Dominion to deal with at tho next general election, as :'nothing could be done without legislation.—■ Received. From the county clerk, Murchison, asking for subsidies to two maternity homes.—ResoLv ed, that a copy of- previous correspondence b«_ sent to the Murchison County Council. From the secretary, North Canterbury Hospital Board, stating that a conference of all hospital boards in the South Island nortl: of the Waitaki river would be Veld on 26th March, to consider proposals to extend the benefits of the Cashmere Hills Sanatorium for consumptives to the said hospital district. . The Wairau Hospital Board wrote suggesting that before the .Cfcnstchurch conference was held, the Westland Grevmouth, Buller, Reetton, kelson 'Wairav, and Picton Boards should meet and discuss the problem from the point of view of the West Coast and Marlborough hoards.
