The Nelson Jockey Club was'favoured by the weather yesterday, when the annual race meeting opened, llain ancl heavy wind was experienced on the pre-»-vious day on the Marlborough side ofi tiie ranges, and visitors from them were dubious as to the chances of iino weather in.Nelson. Here the weather was perfect, the only complaint Heart* being ot the heat, the fair sex espeei^ ally feeling the want of shelter froia the sun s rays. The course was in perfect order, and good racing was tho rule of the cay. The public must have been well pleased with the results for, m no less than six of tfce eight events the favourite Avon, a second and a third' place completing the tally. Second favourites provided two winners and two second places. Consequents dividends were small, the second horse in the Wai-iti I rot paying the best prko tor the day, occupying sixth place or the machine of eight starters. Tho mvestments for the day totalled £10,49/, being £622 better than for the corresponding day of last meeting, when £98/5 was put through. On the second day last year £10,005 was tho total, making £19,980 for that meethm-. Ihe only untoward incident of the day was the inquiry' into the riding o* Chudic in the Stewards' Handicap by, Metarten, who was suspended for tho remainder of the meeting for careless and incompetent riding. Mr C. H.Gorton was the stipendiary steward in attendance, and his duties did not press heavily upou him, for the arrangements worked very smoothly, and at iialf-pasfc four the racing was over, giving, a full JalMiour to catch the train for town., Air Ji. Butland was very successful as starter, and all the officials must sharo in the credit attached to the successful meting. Messrs Vitetta Brothers' orchestra provided the .music which waa very much enjoyed. •
