PAY OF THE AMERICAN SOLDIER.

At tho end of last year the pay of all men in the United States' army who are employed on active service abroad was automatically raised by 20 per cent., and it will be "nstructive for those who may he interested to make a comparison between what Uncle Sam gives his "Sammies"- and what this Dominion pays to its soldiers on active service. I'ollowing is the official statement of the rates of pay now drawn by men in the regular army, the .National Guard (home service) and tie reserve :— ■ —

In.addition to fixed allowances for quarters, heat, and lighting,, they are paid the" following sums annually, with statutory provision tor increases every five years for' all ranks below that of brigadier-general in the united States regular army: ' Second- lieutenants, £350 a year • first^ £400; captains, £480; majors! £600; lieutenant-colonels, £700; colonels, £800; brigadiers-general £1-' 200; majors-general, £1,600; lieuten-ants-general, £2,200.'
