Dannsvirke, Oct. 23. j •Steps are being taken by the Mayor, the chairman of^che Dannevirke County Council, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, and Mr 0.. i Hunter, :M.P., to organise relief for sufferers by yestes'<i(i.v'.s five, and a special appeal is being made to oki Dannovirfc residents throughout the country for assistance. Most of the representatives of the insurance companies met ou the scc&e of the disaster. Three pilferers of salvage appeared in the Court to-day. Two were fined .CIO each and one £5, in default 14 days' imprisonment. A meeting convened by the Mayor wm ~held this afternoon, to consider steps to be takon to relic/o the position ■created by the fire. Over £400 was contributed in the room. Messrs U. M.P., Jonathan. Uc-iden, and F. G. Cownor heading the list with, domations of ~£loo each. ■'There was no exaggeration about tho report previously issinxi It is practically impossible to estimate the losses at present prices of stock and cost of rebuilding. The D.C.A. stock was valued at £36,----000, cost price, and was insured for £25,000, while the- building also involves a heavy loss to the owners. Andrews' lloto.l was valued at £18,----ttfX),_ and the furniture &nd effects at £4,500 The building was insured for £7,710 and the effects for £3225. The Masonic Hotel building was insured for £2250. The loss is considerably above that amount. The licensee, Mr Ross, estimates his loss above tha insurance on stock and eiieots at about £2000.
