SECOND DIVISION LEAGUE.

A meeting of the sub-committee of tho Second Division League was held in the. Mayor's room last evening.' Present: Messrs C. It. Fell (president), i A. Cross, H. Glover, L. Hockey, T.. Cole, -A.'Dyson, K. Lucas, Vie. ■ Web'ley | Wtreasurer), and H. Saunders (secre-l ttary).1. . ' | Accounts amounting to £2 2s Gd were j passed. This mooting adjourned in favour oi: n general meeting held in 1 the Council Chambers.- Mr C. R, Fell occupied the chair, and about twenty members were present. • Mr i<ell explained that a telegram had been received, urging the holding ol: a mass meeting to protest against tho action of the Government in respect oi: separation and children's, allowances, and to pass resolutions demanding immediate consideration of the league's claims. Discussion followed, and a number of points were raised. N It was unanimously resolved, "That this meeting o .f the Nelson branch of I | the Second Division League support tho executive's request for increase with regard to the separation and child's allowance, to be increased to 42s separation and 10s 6d child's allowance." With regard to voluntary enlistment for classes A and B closing" on. the 31st inst., it was resolved that'the central executive be urged to ask for the holding open of voluntary enlistment for each class until just- prior to the first ballot of that class. it was resolved to urge upon the executive _ that - .the distinction between tanks in reg3rd to pensions be removed. Mr Fell expressed a wish that.every member of the Bccontt Division League would assist those members' who are called in the ballot to make their necessary applications.

Oamaru, Oct. 21. A mass meeting called to protest against the inadequate allowances for soldiers' dependents, was held lastnight, and was largely attended. The Second Division .League's proposals were explained by Mr A. K. Lawrence, chairman of th^ local executive, and the Rev. Cyril Tocker. Mr E. 'P. Lee. M. P.. attended, and discussed the matter of pensions and allowances, and, while supporting many of the league's demands, contended that the Government was faced with financial difficulties. A motion was carried unanimously that the meeting expresses its dissatisfaction with the inadequate scale of allowances for-soldiers' dependents, and in their interests urges Cabinet to reconsider the question. Speakers voiced strong condemnation of the Prime Minister's statements that Second Division men were not playing the game, especially as the men were asking nothing for themselves, but merely demanded adequate allowances for their dependents.
