NELSON'S FIRST TEMPERANCE ASSOCIATION.
"The New Zealand Temperance Association" was formed during the first month after the arrival of the,-.-emi-grants. The first members usually addressed public meetings on Sunday afternoons from Ben, the bullock driver's cart. Ben himself was by no means a shining example of temperance habits, but being converted, he soon became an earnest apostle of teetotalism. He gathered a, large proportion of the Nelson children into a Band of Hope, which was not without'influence upon the drinking habits of some of the residents.
