' Auckland, Oct. 15. The Rev. Howard Elliott was assaulted outside his residence tliis evening. In connection with the assault, a returned soldier, Christopher Charles Clements,/:oi'ltemuera, and his brother-in-law, Herbert Eugene McEnfcee. have been arrested.
In a statement to a "Herald" reporter, Clements said that, on .returning •to New -Zealand recently ho had learned Elliott had made statements about his 1 late sister, a nun, who. was drowned at ,Tamnarunui over a year a,a;o. He said he had decided to thrash Elliott, and, armed with a cowhide horsewhip, had waited for him. Elliott was struck on the side of the head and face.
The two defendants were liberated on bail, and will appear at the. Police Court in the morning, when it.ia understood they will ask for a remand.
