DISCUSSION IN THE HOUSE.
(From Our Parliamentary Corres-
pondent.)
Wellington, Oct. 12. The House discussed the Public Works Estimates to-night. Mr Hudson asked the Minister to grant more sympathetic attention to the system of allocating votes for roads, leaving the work to be done by local settlers. This would obviate the waste of timo that occurred under the day labour system when the weather was wet, because in such conditions settlers would turn to on their own work, resuming road construction on the first fine day. It was to their interests to make the money go as far as possible, and expend'it; to the satisfaction of the District Engineer, under his supervision.
Mr Fraser: Have they been turned down? We try, but cannot get them. Mr Hudson: I'm surprised to hear it. There has generally been difficulty about the money.
