UNLAWFUL DEER-SHOOTING.
The Nelson Acclimatisation Society proceeded against William linos and Andrew Kerr for shooting a stac on September 10th, and also for shooting n doe. Lines pleaded guilty and Kerr not guilty. . Mr C. R. Fell, who appeared for the jmormant, the secretary of the. Acclimatisation Society, said the shootinrr took place on Mr Drumicond's property at Wangapoka, and that. both defendants had been previously warned against shooting or going on the property. Mr Drummond's man found the two defendants, with a lad, having just shot a stag, and next day ho found close.by the remains of a doe. Tire society asked for a. substantial fine. After the evidence of Roland Kerr and Mr Drummond had been called in support of counsel's opening, Lines stated that he had shot the deer for meat, and that they were a nuisance. It was admitted that Andrew" Kerr was present, and carried home some of tlo meat, but did not do the actual shooting. The Magistrate stateS tuafi 16 jv&g no excuse for the shooting that Lines wanted meat. As both he and Kenhad taken part, and eacb carried tiio meat, both were guilty. The society was entitled to the protection of deer, and the offence was aggravated by shooting a dco. On the charge of shooting the doe the Magistrate convicted bott< defendants, and fined them each £4, with £1 witnesses' expenses, 7s Court costs, and £1 Is solicitor's fee. On the charge o"f shooting the stag, each defendant was fined £1, with 7s costs, and £1 Es solicitor's fee.
