Major D. W, Talbot, 10th (Nelson) Mounted Rifles, has. been appointed President. Courts-martial and Courts of Inquiry for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Training Camps.

Mr. J. A. Connell, of the Wairarapa, has been appointed editor of the "Grey River Argus," vice Mr. Ernest Atkin, who is about to take editorial charge of the Hawera "'Star."

Advice has been received at Wellington that Brigadier-General Freyberg, V.C, has been severely wounded by a gunshot wound in the chest and thigh. He is doing well in hospital m London. —Press Association.

Word has been received (says the "Motueka Star") that Lieutenant G. L. Tacon 3 formerly of this district, wl:o enlisted in England and joined the Brtish Army, has been invalided home as unfit for further military service. Lieutenant Tacon has been on active service in the Balkans.

Advice has been received in Wanganui by Mr and Mrs C, F Millwarri that their son, Flight Sub-Lieutenant Kenneth H. jVfillwardj who was reported missing on July 7th, is now reported in the German casualty lists as killed in action. This news lias been confirmed" by the Imperial Government.

Lieutenant-Colonel P. O. Andrew, who was Principal Medical Officer at Trentham Camp for two years, and subsequently sat as a member of a medical service board, has been appointed Assistant Director of Medical Services in the Auckland Military District. Major J. P. D. Leahy, who saw service in Egypt and at Salonika, is at present acting P.M.O. at Trentham.

Mr. T. F. Cheeseman, who has compiled the i jubilee sketchl of the Auckland Institute and Museum, has been secretary and curator of the institution since 1875. He was appointed to .these positions the year before the opening of the first part of the museu,m on its present site in Princess street. His 42 years' tenure of office, therefore, las covered the whole period ofHhe growth and expansion of the museum.

A Press Association message from Dunedin announces the death of exPolice Inspector Mallard. The deceased, who was in. his 82nd year, was a fine stamp of disciplinarian, and was at all times noted for his knowledge of matters affecting the police force. After retiring from the force he took a keen interest in public .matters in Dunedin. The late Mr Mallard was formerly a member of the Victorian Police Force, and came to New Zealand in 1863.

Prior to his departure from Blent eim for Motueka, Mr. John Buist was the guest at a gathering which evidenced the popular nature of his lengthy association "with the Blenheim Bowling Club, of which he had been a member for 25 years. On behalf of the bowling fraternity, Mr. A. B. Wright, the president of the club, presented Mr. Buist witb a purse of sovereigns and a memento in the shape of a gold-mounted fountain pen. •

Captain M. M. Mcßae, 11.A.M.U., to wlicm the Military Cross was awarded in connection with tte offensive in France, was a resident of Te Kuiti. Oaptain jVLcllae left for the Old Country immediately after war broke but, and upon arrival lie became attached to tho Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He went through tLe liattle of .Loos, and was.subsequently transferred to Salonika. There lie did good service for ten months, after which he returned to France and became attached to tte Northumberland Fusiliers, who have greatly distinguished themselves. Temporary-Captain JD. G. Napier, reported killed in action on September l6ti,'ivas the second sou of Air. and Mrs. J. Napier, of 148, Olliver's road, Linwood. He was born at Hororata and was in bis 26th year. On leaving school he entered the Customs Department, and was employed at Wellington at the time of his enlistment with the Tentfci Reinforcements. While in the Customs, he was studying for the law, and had passed all liiss examinations with the exception of the final one. In France he was posted to the Rifle Brigade, being a second-lieutenant, and

acted as quartermaster' of tfce 4th Battalion of the Kifle Brigade for some time. Finally he received his promotion i;o temporary-captain, and rejoined his company in the trenches. He took a keen interest in Territorial affairs, and was an officer in the Canterbury Infantry. He was also a member of the New Brighton Surf Club, Linwood Cricket Club and Old Boys' Football Club.

Mrs. E. Powell, of Wellington, and lately of Havelock, Las received cable advice that her youngest son, William Harold, has arrived safely in England, and has again enlisted; Mr. Powell (says the "Pelorus Guardian") will be remembered in certain circles as appealing against his inclusion in a ballot as he was a wounded and discharged soldier. Mr. Powell held an English passport, and (after complying with the Appeal Board's instructions) went to Australia, and when stronger continued his journey to England. Mrs Powell's eldest son, Chaplain E. C. Vf. Powell, of the Nineteenth Reinforcements, has recovered from tis illness while at the front, and is on duty again. Second Lieutenant Victor L. Powell, who was wounded at the beginning of June, has had to return to hospital for operations, which' unfortunately have not yet been successful.
