BARBOW BAT.

(Prom 'The Colonist,"^July 30th)

The Bariow Paradp arranged by the Retailers' Queen Carnival-Committee for Saturday Had to be postponed on account of the inclement ■ weather in the morning. Gifts which were to ■, have been sold from the barrows during tho afternoon were of such a perishable nature that' it was deemed advisable to t>ell them from a stall erected in the oontre of Trafalgar street, lirisk business was soon done by the lady members of the committee, and all the goods were disposed of during the day. IlabLits and poultry were in rarest demand, -and the stock was soon .exhausted.

August 6. Barrow Day on Saturday in support of the candidature of the Retailers'! queen in the carnival now being held to provide funds for the purchase of! Christmas gifts for the boys in the trenches, was a great success. The idea was a happy one, and, apart from the satisfactory financial result achieved, provided a xnnquo spectacular event different from anything that has been seen in Nelson before. The supporters of the queen entered.■ whole-heartedly into the effort, vv'ith the result that" there •were a large number of barrows, and dozens of helpers, all dressed in the colours of the candidate—4he Stars and Striper,, of-, the United States-^-which made a very effective display. Some had gone to considerable trouble to convert fJie upper, structure of their barrows into 'aeroplanes, submarines; kiosks, etc., while all were more, or less effectively ■•decorated. The girls looked particularly charming in their-costumes, and the men were garbed to represent the typical specimens oi UncJe Sam as depicted in the cartoons. Inhere was one giant barrow, "wheeled by a man i nine feet liirh," and there was much speculation among the ehilth'en how there could have been euch a big man sb<nyfc without their having seen him before! There were also tiny tots among the number, with miniature barrows. Every barrow, was kdon with articles of all kinds—rabbits, vegetables, sweets, cakes, fruit,-etc., etc., and business was so brisk that stocks were speedily depleted, and had to bereplenished from the depot until-finally everything was sold out. Trafalgar street was thronged with spectators and purchasers, and there wa« pienty of fun. Before tbe selling was commenced there was a procession through the principal streets, headed by the Mational Reserve Band, which gave the public an opportunity of inspecting the decorated barrows. It was a pity the spectators were not kept to the "footpaths, which would' have ensured n better effect. Prizes were awarded as follows:—
