OBITUARY.

(From. "The Colonist/^ July 25th.) Mr Andrew Rutherford, ono of the ojdest residents'-of .Brightwater, passed away at an early hour on Satufday morning. - Tie deceased, who was 83 yeareofage, was born in Scotland, He arrived in Nelson in tho year 1843, by the ship Phoebe, and, witii liis parents, resided first at.>iotueka and then at Waimea West, $iimately settling at Brightwater. In tho year* 1857 he married the only daughter of tie late Mr W. Jeffries, of Spring Grove. The late Mr Rutherford was cf a most kindly and jovial disposition. Ho leaves a family of one son (Mr Andrew Rutherford, Brightwater) and five daughters,' the daughters being Mrs Austin (Dunedin), "Mrs Brent(Rotorua), Mrs Kerr (Bnghtwater), Mrs Carter (Nelson), and Mrs J. Arnold (Waimea West). Mrs Rutherford died sonic twelve years ago, and one daughter, .Mrs; Hawksworth, of Nelson, predeceased her father by some three years.

. _, . .-• - July 26. . The death occurred in Blenheim last week from heart failure, following a n operation, of Mr. William Ching, a resident of that .district for the past 44 years. The deceased was born in Nelson 71 years ago, and for many year's before his death carried on a produce business in Blenheim. He was a man of progressive ideas, and did mud to adv.ance ,the interests of the district in which he had lived so long. During his career in Marlborough he was a member of the Wairau Licensing Committee, the Blenheim Borough Council, the Blenheim Fire Brigade, the Blenheim School Commitee, the Riversdale Bowling Club, and a colour-sergeant in the Blenheim Rifles, and the holder of the long-service medal. He also belonged to tfce Good Templars and the Foresters' Order. His wife died a few weeks ago. He leaves two sons and six daughters, among the latter being Mrs A. Johnson, Port Nelson, and Mrs. R. C. Withers, Wakapuaka. " The death is announced at Wangamii of Mr. John William Gannaway, who died on Saturday last. Mr. Gannaway was ediUT-ted in London, and arrived in New Zealand in May, 1887, with his father, and was employed in the Panama, New Zealand, and Australian Stoamstip Company service until 1870. He joined the 'Telegraph Department, and was stationed in White's Bay and Auckland between 1870 and 1873. He was then appointed postmaster at- Foxfcon, and in* 1885 was appointed Sub-inspector of Tele- ■ graphs for Nelson. Marlborough, and iWost Coast district, under the late Dr. Lemon. He held this .position until 1899, when he was promoted to tie position of Inspector of Telegraphs for the Canterbury, district, which he held until May, 1912, when he retired at the age cf 60 years, laving completed forty-five years in the Government service. He has left a widow, a son (Mr. Arthur Gannaway, mechanician of the Telegraph Office at Wanganui), and a daughter (Miss Gannaway), two brothers (Mr. Fred. Gan-, naway, Superintendent of Telegraphs, Auckland, and Mr E. C. Gannaway, late assistant postmaster at Wellington), I and a sister (Mrs. J. D. Thomson, Blenheim). - ■ ' | Mr Job L. Munson, printer nnd' pnb-j Usher, a pioneer' of Westport, died; there on Saturday. He was horn in Connecticut, tI.S.A., in 1832. His wife died in 1594, leaving a family of five sons and five daughters. j

Mr Arthur D'Oyley Bayfeild, who died at "Westport recently, at the age of 67, was an old resident of the. West Coast. Born in Norfolk, England, he arrived at I^ttelton when a child with His parents (two of the ''OariterWry Pilgrims"), in the Randolph, one of the first ships conveying settlers for that part of the colony, and at the age of 12 ho entered the service of the Bank of New Zealand at Lyttelton. After .some years there he was transferred to Roafton. He left the, bunk and removed to Nelson, where he began business as an auctioneer and land and estate agent, in partnership with the late Colonel Holden Webb. About 27 years ago he settled in Westport, where he interested himself in mining developments Amongst other things, ho iio.ated into a company the Westport-Cardiff Uoal Mine at Seddonville, a property which was afterwards taken over by the Government. The deceased gentleman, who had been ill for a long lime before liis death, has lefh a widow and a family of seven (ihreo suns and four daughters).

August 2. The rlmth cccmrea yesterday morning of Mr "William Krown, jeweller, of Hardy street, a highly respected citizen of long Ending. Deceased, who was Lorn afc Dumfries, Scotland, on February 4th. 183R, served his apprenticeship with hi* father, a well-known -watchmaker and jeweller, and came to New Zealand with his wife, arriving at Dunedin in 1804. After working there and at Queen siown for some time, lie wont to the West Coast, where he carrier! on business successfully at Hokitika for some years. In 1579 he came to Nelson, and established himself _in business'in Bridge street. In 188.5 he entered into partnership with Mr Louis Kovr, and was associated with him in tho business of Brown ani Kerr until I.olo^ when the partnership vas dissolved. Deceased is survived by two sons (Messrs Alexander and Geortie Brown, of Nelson), and three daughters (Mrs. Asher, Pukekohe, Mrs W. A. Dee, Nelson, and Miss I. Brown, Nelson). His wife predeceased him some years igo. Tho late Mr Brown Va-s an elder of tho Presbyterian j Church, n position he hole! for many ; years, and also a proniirsont Freemason, although latterly-compelled "by bin physical infirmities" to close his'active interest in th~ craft. He w.-ts a P.M., and during his residence in Nelson was y-ttached to tho Southern Star Lodge, No. 735, E.G.' Private information was received in town yesterday of the death at Frankjton Junction of Mrs Williams, wife of Mr J. C. Williams, formerly licensee of the Wakefield Hotel.

August 6. Mr J. H. C. Martin, v.iio died at Wakapuaka on Saturday, iv his 84th rear, was at one time a'prolific contributor to the press on controversial tomes, and a purveyor of local news. In his earlier years he -was engaged in the winting trade, and was so employed a.t Blenheim. Mr Martin, v.hn was unmarried, rras the oivre.r of the roadmetal ouarry near Tcdd's Bush. He had had many and varied experiences, md possessed the respect of those who knew him.

. August 13. The death has occurred at his residence, Pcole street, Motueka, of Mr George Henry Slatter, an old and wideiv respected resident jof the district. The deceased, whd *was 78 years of age I was born in London and came out to I New Zealand with his parents in the shjp Pekin, which left London Docks on August 6th, 1849. He was apprenticed tot thn carpenterin gtrade, at which ht, worked m. Motueka as a young man. He built' the first cart bridge over the Moutore river. Afterwards he removed to Ngatim'oti and was farming in that district until pome six years ago, when he took up his residence in Mo- £*?£<?« Ho was n mnmbor of the local QddfeJJows' Lodge of, some 52 years' standing, during which time he held various offices, including that of Prov. G.M. He was also one of the founders ? Court Perseverance, A.0.F., established some 54 years ago, in whicn he also held different positions, .including that of C.R. and secretary. He i^ survived by a brother and sister (Mr James Slatter/and Mrs James McEachen, both of Nelson) and two sons and two daughters, by his first wife, yiz., Mr Harry W. Slattert Tasman; Mr Jack S. Slattbr,. London; Mrs George F. Freeman, Takaka; Mrs C. R. Remnant, Pangatotara. He also leaves.a widow. The Rev. J-. Newlands officiated at the funeral. The Foresters' and Oddfellows' services were read by Bros. P. G. Moffatt and H..Rumbold respectively.—"Star.? '

Barton, the well-known <: i* fus proprietoi, passed away at Epsom, Auckland, after a long illness. He leaves a widow and two sons. Mr Barton was very successful m the circus business. His show always travelled by road, and for the last five years Had been in..New Zealand, lie trained his own horses, and had several racing on the turf. °
