STRANGE VESSEL ASHORE.

SEVEN ARMED FOREIGNERS.

A recent message from Port Darwin states that blacks from the western side of Bathurst Island have reported to the Catholic mission- on the island that, following; a hurricane on April 1, a strange vessel was driven on to a sandpit on the western end of the island, and that seven men who could speak neither English nor the aboriginal language came ashore. They describe the men as being armed " and the description has led'to a slirmise that the party may possibly be Germans endeavouring to sail from the point. The probability, says a correspondent of the "Melbourne Age "is that it is a party of Dutch or "Portuguese traders, or even Malays, driven from their course by the' gale. To clear the matter up, however, Captain Barker,-with a small force and a machine gun, sailed in the Government auxiliary schooner Alcairo to investigate.
