When Mr Malcoum Nicco), grand secretary of-the Grand Lodge of New Zealand Freemasons, was in London at the time of the outbreak of the war, ho had the misfortune to be the victim of a theft when travelling on the underground railway, whereby he was deprived of a valuable gold watch presented to him by the Freemasons of Dunedin. Mr. Niccol has just attained the jubilee of his admisvsion into Freemasonry, and occasion was taken recently by a number of his Masonic friends in Auckland, in celebration: of, the event, to^ present him with another gold watch, similar to that stolen from him.

Constable Lowry, of To Awamutu, had an unpleasant experience one afternoon (says the Waikato "Times"). He .was crossing the Pun-^i river on horseback, and missed the ford. His horse was swept off its feet and the rider unseated, one foot being hung -up in the stirrup. The horse was carried some 50 yards down stream, dragging Lowry with it before it scrambled 1 ashore, where it stood quietly, and the constable was able to extricate himself from his precarious position just before losing consciousness. '

A young man named Alfred Ernest Harle, of Kaikoura, was charged at Blenheim on Friday, before Meesrs E. H. Penny and J. J.W. White, Justices of the Peace, with having asi-aultea Thos. Renwick at Dumgree by pointing a revolver at him ( says" the '"Express"). He admitted the offence. The accused went to the Dumgree Station on the night of the 17th inst.,. and had an altercation with a "man against, whom he had a grievance. Mr Renwick1 s attention v&s attracted by the row, in which the accused was roughly handled, and he proceeded to turn Harle off the place. It was then that thfe accused produced the revolver. Sub&equentlv the man was arrested by Constable" Williams. Mr-C. H. Mills appeared for the accused, who expressed regret and undertook not to go near Dumgree again. The accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when .called on, and the revolver was confiscated.

A trial shipment of venison is being sent Homo for distribution among the military hospitals (says the "Star") thanks to the patriotic action of members of the North Dunedin Gun Club, who offered to procure it. The deer (fallow) were shot in the Blue Mountains, and as they are reported to be in good condition, will no doubt be greatly appreciated by our nen. .
