_ Sergt.-Major" W. T. Churchward, of Blenheim, has been successful (says the "Express") in passing his examination enabling him to receive a, commission in the New Zealand Forces.

The death occurred recently of Mr. Archie McDonell, at hjis residence, Parewanui, Bulls. He was the eldest son of "Mrs. A. McDonell, who still resides at, "Inverhoe," Bulls. The deceased, who was born in 1850, had the distinction of being the first white, child born in Rangitikei, and at the time of his death he was the oldest native interpreter in New Zealand. .

Major Morrison, at one time general staff officer of the Wellington military district, has been appointed to a similar position in the Canterbury-district, where he will relieve Major Finnis, who goes on active service. It will be rsmembered (says the "Manawatu Standard") that Major Morrison returned from the front three months ago, and was sent to' the Hanmer Convalescent Homo to recover from, his wounds. He was discharged recently from that institution and passed by the Medical lioard as fit for active service, but evidently the authorities desire to keep him in New Zealand for n further period.
