A Press .Association telegram states that Captain J. A. Hay ward, DeputyHarbourmaster at Wellington, died on Monday night in a private hospital a; few days after operation, aged 47. The death, has occurred of Mr Charles R. D. Richardson, senior inspector of schools in Otago. He had been operated upon for an internal -trouble. .Mrs, L. E.; Smith, retiring matron of the, Deniiiston Hospital, has been ] made the recipient-, of a valuable- pre-; sentatipn from the miners of Burnott's; Face and Denniston. j Mr. James M'lndoe, formerly of' Westport, has entered upon his new' duties as clerk of the Magistrate's and Warden's Courts, Greymouth.. i

The Rev. Father Minogue, who succeeds Father Arkwright as er.rate of Westport, is a. son of Sergeant Minogue, formerly of Westport and now of Palmerston North.

Mr. Henry t Bracy, the well-known operatic singer, who was for very many years associated with the J. C. Williamson companies', died in a private hospital at Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Mr. p. T. Sandford, chief clerk in the Hokitika Lands Office, is under orders to transfer to Wellington. Mr. F. A. Cullen, of Auckland, succeeds him.

At his own request, Major James O'Sullivan, Inspector of Equipment "and Ordnance Stores, lias retired from active duty in the Defence Department after nearly thirty-nine years' cont n.tious service,' during sixteen years ol'.Avhich he wa« in charge of the* Defence Stores Branch. Jsews has been received from London ,of ihe death of Captain Christopher, Maling,:N.Z.€!., in.London on December 18th. The deceas&d took aii active part in the Maori War, and was awarded the New. Zealand Cross for valour. Tlie Cross:.jyas presented.to...him at. a:parade.of the Nelson Volunteers in the Botanical Reserve in 1877.

Members of the Grevmouth Bowling ; and Social, Clubs met for the purpose : of bidding good-bye to Mr. E. W. Cave, of. the Justice ,"Department, who has been transferred / to' Palmereton North, and presented him with a clock. Mr. Cave also received a presentation of a, set of silver-mounted ebony brushes from the Greyniouth Golf Club. .

Mr. J. C. Simpson, of Waipukurau, has been advised by the Defence Department that, his son, Lieutenant Hector Simpson, was killed during- an engagement with the J enemy in East Africa in January. The deceased, who was 35 years of age, took part in the Boer war. After visiting Waipnlcanrau at the close of that struggle, !>.> returned to South Africa and joined the South African Police. When lie met his death he was attached to a Rhodesian Native Regiment.
