j The Roumanian General Socecu was condemned by a court-martial at Jassy to five years' penal servitude' and degradation for betraying the Roumanian army. . His command on December Ist was executing-a plan made by General Berthelot, the head of the French Mission in Southern Roumania. The army made a vigorous offensive on tho river. Argehr.^.'against. German and Bulgarian troops who had crossed the Danube and'were advancing to Bucharest. The enemy were thrown back in disorder a dozen miles. Socecu \s! army turned the enemy's left, cutting them off completely from Falkenhayn'e array. • ■ ' General Berthelot sent a wireless] message to Paris announcing his success, and adding that he intended to dj"ive Mnclcensen to the Danube. I
But Soceou, instead of continuing the pursuit, remained inactive. When ordered to advance, Socecu commanded his army to retreat. Thus Mackensen was saved.
