HUN CASUALTIES.
Dr. Hermann Rosemeier, nntil recently one of the editors of the Berlin "Morning Post,", has written a pamphlet •., entitled ' 'German People. Wake Up!" and, strange to say, it has not been censored by the German military authorities. Dealing with the casualty lists, .the author makes the following exposure :—
"For many months past the casualty lists have contained no dates or places describing when and where such and such losses occurred. The losses in various battles.are distributed throughout dozens of lists in order; to deceive even those persons who have time and inclination to pore through the gigantic pile to which our awful death roll has now swollen. While the military authorities swank about with fantastic figures of 'captured {prisoners,' -they are damnably careful to.see that the number of our men taken prisoners by the enemy is not allowed to assume too large proportions in the German official casualty, lists. But -all "these tricks are unavailing. In well-informed circles the truth'is known, and the German poople should learn it. One and a-quarter million soldiers, at least, have been killed. We have lost about 750,000 in prisoners, deserters, and 'missing' men. There • are about 3,000,000 wounded, of whom about : 1,000,000 are condemned •to permanent and incurable incapacity. That i s the bloody balance of the war to the end of April, 1916. Of the sick we say nothing. Their number is entirely incalculable. But it is eertairly tnormou's." Serious people (medical men of repute among them) estimate the number of soldiers suffering from various forms of obnoxious disease at 1,500,000 alone. It may be that. this tenable Figure" is exaggerated. But that disagreeable and infections maladies a.ro causing awful havoc in the trenches is beyond all doubt."
