PRICE OF WHEAT TO BE FIXED

(Received Dec. 21, 9.10 p.m.) London, Dec. 20. Mr R. E. Prothero, President of the Board of Agriculture, addressing the Agricultural Committee in London, said the department had prepared a. scheme for the fullest utilisation of land. It was supplying to every county a list of essential products, and the quantities it was desirable to grow. A survey would be carried out in every county, and there would be compulsory acquisition if necessary. Farmers would be empowered to plough grass lard. It was proposed to fix the contract price of wheat at 60s. County committees would be asked to ascertain the number of men in- every/viliage willing to grow potatoes. The-War Office had promised that it would not call up more agricultural workers at ;vpre"serit. He hoped to similarly organise an economical scheme of jag breeding. ' There would -not he any '^fidaiing with the maximum or minimum price^ of wheat If the price went -above -50s the farmer would lose, if below he would gam. The Government "would shortly announce the prices of oats and barley.
