The first ballot "under the Military Service. Act was commenced by tho Government Statistician this morning, Mr S., E. McCarthy, S.M., supervising. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr J. P. Luke), the president of tlie Trades Council (Mr J. Reardon) and press representatives were present. The Minister of Defence states that the names of men drawn in the ballot will not foe published until they are gazetted. .
