COMPETITIVE DESIGNS
MR. FRANK PECK'S ACCEPTED.

A • special meeting of the Nelson Hospital .and Charitable A.id Board was held yesterday to consider competitive designs for the new Alexandra Home, which had been invited, by the Board. There were present Messrs. H. Baigent (chairman), E. S. tloult, W. Lock, W. N. Franklyn, T. Bell, and Mrs. Watson.
The instructions issued to the architects were to provide a building for the accommodation of 40 males and 10 females, and a staff of 6. cost to be about £5000. the building to be erected on the old site.
Three designs were submitted by local architects, and these were considered.
It was i-esolved on the motion of tt\ if 0 ' seconde(i by Mrs. Watson, tnat the new home be erected in brick Before any design was accepted,- the chairman suggested that the architects should be notified that it had been decided to build in brick. He said it was no use adopting a plan without an estimate.
Mr. Bell said he would like to see the- matter adjourned so that he could inspect the plans. _ Some discussion followed^.Mr Frankiyn expressing the opinion voiced by i?-+i, d ?*!?, Previous meeting, that if the Board did not do something they ought to be turned out. On tho motion of Mr. Lock, seconded by Mr. Franklyn, it was decided to acce.pt one of the plans by ballot Mr. floult opposed what he termed a secret ballot, " n and said the plan should oe accepted in open board A ballot was then taken, and when the result was announced Mr. Franklvn •STf I* li e,desi^ Emitted by Mr. Frank Peck, of Nelson, be approved.
