Mr W. Gothard, editor and part proprietor of the "Westport Times," and Mrs.Gothard, who have been on a visk of nearly six months to Australia, returned to Nc"w Zealand last week
_ Word has beon received that Private James Taylor, formerly employed at Messrs J. P. Cooko and Sons', whose mother resides at Havelock, was lulled la Prance on July loth. Some years ago Mrs Taylor (now Mrs Boers) was a resident of Collingwood.
The Wellington "Post" .says': "It has now been ascertained that the report that; Captain F. M. Turner had been r.uled-m trance was incorrect. The mistake apparently arose through a confusion, of names. Captain Turner is serving with the New Zealand Artillery in France.
Among those ■•reported -wounded on Monday were:—Corporal J. A. Scott (next of kin, Mr, J. A. Scott, Takaka. mother); Private W. R. Walkei (J. walker, ■ Ferntown, Collingwood, father) Private J. F. Bell, son of Mr ■*-■• ii. Bell, Port Nelson, was reported to be m hospital dangerously ill.
At the monthly meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board yesterday, on the motion of Mr Mercer, seconded by Mr JVlacmahon a resolution of sympathy with the chairman (Mr H. R. Duncan) on the death of his wife was carried members standing. ' '
Private P. M'Nabh (son of ,Mr E M'Nabb, of Motueka). killed in France formerly lived m Palmer-ston North, and was one of six brothers who volunteered for service. One was rejected for physical reasons after lijeina; in camp at Rangiotu for some months. The -others went forward with their units. Two * were killed on Gallipoli, and the third son has now given his life in France, where the two remaining brothers are ■still fighting. The young^ est was just over 18 when he went away with the force.
A recent arrival in Auckland by the Niagara, was Mr S. Myerscough, Mus. 8., Oxon., F.R.C.0., examiner for Trinity College of Music, London. Mr Myerscough is touring New Zealand for the purpose of conducting the examinations held annually ''under the auspices Of the" College. * ,
The directors of the National Insurance Company of New Zealand have invited Mr James Farquharson, local manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, to fill the vacancy on the boiard caused by the resignation of Mr G. R. Ritchie." Mr Ritchie has been obliged by ill-health to leave the Dominion for an. extended holiday.
Mrs W. P. Reeves, wife of the exHigh Commissioner for New Zealand, has been appointed a member of a Roral Commission which has been set up'at Home to investigate. • the principal causes that have led to the increase of prices of commodities of general consumption since the beginning of the war. Mrs Reeves is the only woman member of the commission.
The death is announced of Mr Georgo Heron, J.P., a prominent resident of Ma.sterton. The deceased, who died suddenly, was born in 1840 in Forfarshire, Scotland, where he was educated. Sergeant Frank G. Glastonbury, kitted in action in France on July 14, was the fourth son of Mr and "Mrs Alf. Glastonbury, of Oanvastown. He enlisted in the Ist Otago Battalion at the commencement of the war. Ho was wounded in the upper-arm at Gallipoli on Anzac Day, made (a speedy recovery, and served in the trenches, and was quickly promoted sergeant. Whilst in the^ tienches ho contracted pneumonia, and was senr. to England. He rejoine:! his unit just before they were ordered to I'rauce. He was a very promising youth, and won a scholarship before reaching the age of 13. He was then a Marlborough High School boy for three years, passed the Civil Service examination, anefwas appointed a cadet in the Valuation and Advances Office, Dunedin. and had risen to junior clerk when war 'broke out. When killed he was in hi?, twenty-fourth year. He has two older brothers serving in Franco Len and Will. Tho three brothers'recently met in Franco. Their eldest brother, Allied (Jack), although married and having a family of three, has enlisted in tho Svuvnteenth Reinforcements.
