RUSSIAN OFFICER'S HOAX.
LUNCHED WITH YON BER GOLTZ
The story of the audacious adventures of a Russian officer, Lieutenant Aldatoff, in escaping from an Austrian war prison at Senntargberg, is told by the | "Petit Journal." , . : In attempting to hoax the Austrian ■authorities he announced that he was of Turkish origin, that he had a true I Mussulman soul, and that he wished to fight in the Turkish army in order to preach a h#ly wax. He was sent to Vienna, where he was interviewed by the Turkish Ambassador, who, after questioning him on his origin and faith,, was satisfied, and wrote to the Minister for War at Constantinople.
He was now treated in a gorgeous way by the Austrian and 'Turkish authorities. "I lived in a first-class hotel," he said, in tolling his adventiires, "and affcev receiving a ie% from the* Turkish Ambassador, an evening party was given at the Turkish Embassy in mv honour." , . ')
Before leaving for Constantinople he was introduced to Marshal yon der Goltz, who saidj "It would be a good thing if all Russian officers with a Miissnlma,n soul acted as ■ you have done." He afterwards lunched in the train with the German field-marshal.
The escape was made at Bucharest. While the Austrian officers accompanying Lieutenant •iVld'atoff were looking out of the windoAvs ; he. walked to the rear of tho train and got-out'of the last compartment, -'A few 'sec-buds' afterwards," added Lieutenant Alclatoff, "1 wa,s in a-cab driving to / the-Russian .Legation, ar.d-later I rejoined my regi-
