A GERMAN COMMUNIQUE.

(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association)

Amsterdam, July 23

A German communique: "Strong reconnoitring detachments in the vicinity of Richebcurg were repulsed. • After increased artillery-fire during the evening and night between the- Ancre and the Son*me there.were infantry attacks on the Thiepval-Guillemor.i front. The British attacks, despite heavy losses and the number of troops engaged; failed. There was violent hand to

hand fighting near West Pozieres, Foureaux Wood, and. the Western edge of Longueval. The enemy's attempted attacks between GuiUemont and the Sonirne were stifled in the trenches. Our curtain fire on the Somme is very strong. Artillery duels south of the Sornme were followed by separate French attacks, which failed.
