Yesterday, evening, at the pai;ade of the Infantry Company of the National Reserve, Nelson, Lieu+enant-Colone! Grace presented the Maori War Medal to Mr William Thomas Riddell Davey,who saw service in the New Zealaivl Militia during the Taranaki war. Mr Davey served under the late Major Sir •Harry Atkinson, who as captain at that time commanded the company- in which Mr Davey served. In presenting the medal Lieu+enant-Colonel Grace referred to the principal actions in which Mr Davey took pait—the engagement at Waireka, when the M<litia were saved from annihilation by the timely arnval of a strong party of blueiackets fiom H.M.S, Niger, under the command of Captain Cracroft, and the taking of the pa of Mahoetaln, when the Militia and Volunteers greatly disticiccuished themselves in company with the 65th Regiment. In the~ latter engagement Mr Davey was wounded, the men on either side of him being killed. It i^ understood lhat tiie.medal presented cairies with it a substantial pension, which w 111 no doubt be received with pleasure by tins T°tpran. who in his y*mncr days served his nation and country so well and faithfully.
