MAITAI BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING: -' ' '

, -(From "The Oolonist,"-/une'27.) r . The annual meeting e£ the .Maitai Bowling dub was held at the Public Trust rooms last evening. The president (Mr G. C. Glover) .occupied -the chair, and there was a large attendance of members. The annual report, which was read by the secretary (Mr S. F. Sherwood) stated:— '' . •

The green was opened for play on Saturday, September 18th, 1915, and was closed early in May,-1916. thanks to the attention bestowed on it by the caretaker, Mr W. Tomblin, the green was m perfect playing order right throughout the season, and has been very favoiuably commented on by. Tjsitor.% horn other districts.

The committee /egrets that the membership shows a fallmg-off tins season; and trusts that members will us 3 their best endeavours to add new members to the club, as well as to help build up the finances. Amongst the losses may be mentioned Messrs Court and Pegler, two good 'sports" 'and |playeps, who have left for Auckland and i'JPimaru respectively. Messrs A. 11. Richards, J. Stewart, and R. H. Johnson; ha.ye joined the forces to fight in the Empire's cause, andbaie our best wishes for their welfare on the field of battle and a safe and honourable return to their homes. Death has taken from xis two highly respected i members in the late Messrs W. Wilkens and T. A. Gibson, to the relatives of whom we tender our respectful sympathy. •'.■-;,. ' j

Club Competitions.—There.'were good entries in al Imatches, and in the early part of the season great interest was taken in the: play, but towards the close mem!ber-s, seemed to have- lost interest, and some competitions were not concluded.

The competitions and winners were as follows:—

Senior Championship (24 ■* entries; -played in 3 sections).: Winner, W. Thorn (President's trophy); runner-up, G. F. jDodds. '«/'-.

Junior Championship (13 entries): Winner, J. Hurley; runners-up, G. Logan and A. Stallard (tie). Champion Pairs (15 pairs): This competition was not completed. Novice Pairs (6 pairs): Doylo and Hurley (s) and Treacher and Stallard (s) tied. .

Club Pairs (sealed handicap): Winners: Logan and Hockey (s). • Saturday. Rinks (30 rinks): Winners, A. Dee, E. A. Sherwood, W. H. Simpson, and W. H. Frost (s). Pennant and Shield Matches.-r-Four games only were played, one game being dropped on account of rain. Nelson won three out of the four games in each competition, the aggregate figures bejiug: Pennant, Nelson 499, Maitai 445; Shield, Nelson 347, Maitai 309. Field Cup: Fixed dates for this competition were also made, but owing to rain coming on on three.occasions while the games were in progiess, only two games were completed, both of which were won by Nelson. Association Tournament. —The club was represented at Christchurch by one rink, but they were not successful in bringing back any trophy. Howeve*.\ on the return trip games were played with clubs on the West Coast, and those taking part had a very enjoyable time. Centre Tournament: This was held at Blenheim at Christmas, 1915, the club being represented by two rinks, without success, but in the Pairs, W. T. Brundell and E. Richards (s) won the first prize.

l' New; Year's Day Tournament.—A full rink competition was played on the two local greens in aid of the Lady Liverpool Fund, when C..,M. Whelan, G. W Jacobs, W. H. Simpson, and S. F. Sherwood (s), won all their games, and beat Munroe's rink in the final. The prize (a full set of.bowls) has been presented •to the club.

Easter Tournament-—This was held as usual, and brought -a large number 'of visiting bowlers, who bad a very geod I time. The proceeds were all given to [patriotic funds, which .with cqllections, i etc., amounted to a very fair sum. Thanks. —The committee vasK to record the thanks of the club to the members who during the year donated so liberally towards paying off debentures, etc. The report w ras adopted.

The hon. treasurer (Mr J. E. Milner) read the balance-sheet, which _after some discussion wa-sadopted. ;. Two new menibers were elected.

Officers w rere elected as follows:—President, Mr W. T. Brundell; vice-presi-dent, Mr J. E. Allen; hdh. treasurer, Mr J. E. Milner (re-elected) ; hon* secretary, Mr S. P..Sherwood (re-elected); auditor, Mr J. E. Allen (re-elected); Management Committee, Messrs W. H. Frost, W. H. Simpson, G. I<ogan, A. SievAvright, A. Stringer. W; Laird, and H. McCartney; Match Committee. Messrs Brundell, Allen: .G. Logan, and W. Laird.

A committee consisting of Messrs J. McEachen. A. Sievwright, S. F. Sherwood, J. E. Allen, and J. Hurley was set up to watch the interests of young players and new members. Several members intimated their intention of presenting their debentures, amounting to £41, to the club, amidst applause. . - It was resolved that a letter of thanks "be forwarded to-those members who had 'banded in their debentures. *

Mr Hounsell brought up the question of substitutes for pairs, and reference to the rules showed that a substitute was allowed provided the opposing skips consented.

Members expressed the opinion that the power of appointing substitutes should be taken: out of the liands of players. . . It was resolved that the rule regarding substitutes in pairs matches be rescinded. Mr A. W. Stallard then moved tlaat the following be substituted: —"That in pairs competitions the Match Committee has discretionary power to allow substiSeconded by Mr W. H. Simpson. Mr Allen moved as an amendment "That no substitutes be allowed in pairs competitions.'' Seconded by Mr Whelan. After a long discussion the ameridjment was lost and the motion carried by an overwhelming'majority. .j~ ' The newly-elected president (Mr Brundell) then took the chair. He briefly thanked members for the honour conferred tippn him, and hoped-the club vould have a'successful year.' - Mr W. A.
