RUSSIANS ENGOUNTERING DESPERATE RESISTANCE

The British and Prench gains north of the Somme are being steadily extended by local actions. The situation south of the Somme is unchanged. The Auzacs are engaged in the offensive, Severe fighting continues on the Meuse. On the Russian front the Austro-Grerm*ns maintain their desperate efforts to retard the Russian advance on the Stokhod, and are making enormous sacrifices to save Kovel. '.-■ ■ it ■'■'".
