Mr Asquith, speaking in the House of Commons, said that a Home Office Committee had been appointed to determine work to which genuine conscientious objectors may be put. Those who used conscience as a cloak ought to be treated with the utmost rigour. The genuine objector who undertook national work would not be subject to military discipline. ■
Lord Selborne, in the House of Lords, said the War Office was obstructing the release of soldiers whomthe Government considered ought to be working on the land.
Mr H. Samuel, speaking in the House of Coirmons, said that subjects of the Allies resident in Britain would be given an opportunity of enlisting with the British Army, otherwise they would be returned to their own countries to fulfil thei'r^ military obligations. ■ ! Mr Joynson Hicks urged the internment of all alien enemies. There should be a clean sweep. There were several German restaurants which wei-e dangerous centres. Cases where exemptions were granted on the advice of the police after consultation with the naval and military authorities should be reviewed. , A conference is f being arranged between the Associated Chambers of Commerce and members of the House of Comniong in reference to the establishment of a Ministry of Commerce.
