The many friends of Mr Arthur Emms, the popular motorist, who has been laid aside for two weeks with a severe attack of influenza, will be r.-lcased to learn that he has sufficiently recovered to be conveyed to his horao in Takaka, arid it is hoped be will soon bo in bis old place ''on the wheel."

News received by cable state? that Lieutenant J. IT. Cock, son of Mr J. H. Cock, who has recently been serving in France, lias received a bullet through the left forearm, and is now in hospital. Vlt, will be remembered that Lieutenant [Cock, who'was then a private, was serijously ■wounded in the left .^houlder at iG-allipoli.
Mr A. Macintosh, superintendent in New Zealand for Dalgcty and Co., Ltd., has intimated to his board of directors in London his intention to retire its soon a-s arrangements can be conveniently made to relieve him. Those, Jie expects., will bo effected at an early date. Mr Macintosh has held the position of superintendent for eight years past.
: The Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music, London, has awarded an exhibition to Miss Madelaine Hooker, as the result of her examination in pianoforte at Timaru centra, last year. This exhibition entitles' her to a. course of musical tuition at the Royal Academy or the Royal College, in London, of two or three years' duration. Miss Hooker comes from Hawera, and was only 10 years of age at the time of the examination in which siie was success-1 ful. . ■ I
Relatives of .Private Frank Hawksworth, who left New i-Zealand with the j Ninth Reinforcements, were informed yesterday afternoon that he was killed it actioji on May 22nd. The deceased, who was farming in the Sounds district when he enlisted, was the second surviving son of the late Mr J. Hawksworth, and a brother of the Misses Hawksworth, of Nelson. He was ,26 years of age. and a fine manly young fellow. Telegrams of sympathy have been received "from the Governor, the j Prime Minister, and the Minister of Defence. The deceased's, eldest brother, Sergeant John Hawksworth, also gave his life for his country, dying from sickness'contracted during the South African campaign.
