(Special to "Tlio Colonist.") Wellington, May 8. Mr. Percy Morgan, Director of the Geological Survey, has been appointed Uhder-Secretary for Mines, thus placing the department in a position independent of the Pubiio Works Department, with which it was merged. The Hon. W. D. IS. Mac-Donald. Minister of Mines, states that it is desirable that the head of the department should have a special knowledge of niining. Mi*. Morgan has special 'qualifications, and his acceptance of the appointment will not interfere to any great extent with Geological Survey work. New South Wales has had a .satisfactory experience of dual positions held by one officer. Tliore sterns to ho a boom in #old mining and prospecting, particularly in South" West-land in the case of both quartz and alluvial claims.
